NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Incumbent Mayor Keith Summey has declared himself the winner in North Charleston’s mayoral race.
Summey has captured 47% of the vote with John Singletary with 35% of the vote.Click here for results of Tuesday night’s races.
Summey, who has served as mayor of North Charleston for a quarter century, thanked his supporters on Facebook for the assumed victory earlier in the evening.
Singletary is refusing to concede and claims there was voter suppression issues in Charleston and Dorchester counties. Singletary says he will concede if in fact Summey received more votes.
According to Singletary, many people at Fort Dorchester High School were not allowed to vote, and the poll person put in wrong numbers to pull up ballots, but brought up a screen with no mayoral vote.
Singletary was joined by Thomas Dixon, Floyd Dotter, and Ashley Peele in efforts to unseat Summey.
Dixon’s campaign slogan was “Enough is enough.” Two of his top issues were reducing gun violence and promoting quality public education.
Dotter is a small business owner and he says he was hoping to create more “unity in the community.”
Peele said she was running to create a safer, greener, more equitable North Charleston. And Singletary is a business owner who was looking to create new community centers and redesign the city’s police department.
