Listen to Steven Tyler's Pristine Isolated Vocals on "Angel"

Aerosmith is one of the biggest bands of the 20th century in no small part due to frontman Steven Tyler.

Tyler is a bonafide rock legend, and one of few singers whose instrument has maintained its unique tone and range through decades of hard partying, hard rehabbing and even harder touring.

Aerosmith's ups and downs have been well-chronicled over the years. The band ruled the '70s as one of the leaders in hard rock, while the '80s were mostly less kind. For most bands, that would have been it, but Aerosmith refused to play up the nostalgia game.

By the late-'80s Aerosmith did the improbably by entering its most commercially successful period almost 20 years into the band's career!

A huge part of that resurgence was Tyler's viability as a pop star, delivering incredible vocal performances like that of 1987's "Angel" from the band's Permanent Vacation album.

Someone uploaded Tyler's vocal stems to the above YouTube video, and it gives you a great idea of how untouchable he was — and still is — as a vocalist in the world of arena rock. We can hear all of Tyler's ad libs and perfectly placed harmonies on the track, which peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

This week, Aerosmith is preparing to announce details of its 50th anniversary residency in Las Vegas, a run of shows guitarist Joe Perry says will be like nothing fans have seen before.
