SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A Parent Teacher Association with Dorchester District Two rallied in Summerville for education reform. They lined North Main Street from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. with signs.
The PTA organized the rally for people who could not make it to the march and rally in Columbia organized by SC for Ed, a teacher advocacy group.
When the rally in Columbia ended, some joined them in Summerville to continue spreading their message.
Cars honked as they passed by throughout the day.
Educator Kelly Kennedy was a teacher for 27 years and is the principal at Dubose Middle School. She attended the rally in Columbia and came back to show support in Summerville.
"As we know public school is the backbone of our community, the backbone of our state and if we don't have a strong public school system, we don't have a strong community," Kennedy said.
There were several DD2 teachers, students and parents who joined the local rally.
Fifth grader Henry says this was his first time being part of an event like this.
“Being part of a protest is probably one of the best things that you can do because you’re standing up for what you believe in,” Henry said. “Teachers aren’t getting paid enough and our schools aren’t getting funded enough.”
Ninth grader William McLean says it's great that so many people are supporting for the cause.
“There’s a bunch of teachers that aren’t getting paid as much as they should be for the amazing work that they’re doing for the students that go there,” McLean said. “A lot of my teachers, I don’t want them to leave to other schools that are getting paid more because they are really helping me out. I want them to help other students that come after me.”
Local businesses have also shown their support by offering the people rallying food and refreshments.
