State treasurer honors James Island teacher for lessons on managing money

JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - A James Island classroom welcomed a special guest Tuesday who came to honor a teacher who makes sure her students understand finance.

State Treasurer Curtis Loftis came down from Columbia to honor fifth-grade math teacher Meagen Whitten and awarded her teacher of the month.

For a part of Whitten’s curriculum, she teaches her kids about financial literacy and how math is applicable in the real world.

“It’s exciting to watch them,” Loftis said. “We’re mainly here today to honor Mrs. Whitten. She’s our teacher of the month. She’s teaching financial literacy. She’s committed the time - even though it’s not in her core - she’s committed that time. And we can’t thank her or the school enough.”

Loftis also spoke with the class about how important it is to know about money, saving and making a budget.
