Rare Whale Shark Sighting Off the Coast of Charleston

CHARLESTON, SC (WEZL) - A whale shark was spotted about 30 miles off the coast of Charleston last month during a fishing charter.

Michael Krivohlavek, a Mount Pleasant native working on the charter, shot this video and posted it online. He told the Post and Courier that everyone on the boat was shocked by the sighting.

Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean. This one was at least 20 feet long.

This is a rare sighting because whale sharks are not normally seen this far north. They prefer living in more tropical waters.
