Deputies: Man Drove SUV into Marsh, Likely Escaped After Chase

LIVE 5

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a man drove his SUV into the water at a Johns Island boat landing and was able to swim away, according to sheriff's office spokesman Roger Antonio.

A deputy tried to stop the car on Savannah Highway in Ravenel Monday morning around 3 a.m. when the chase started. The man then drove to the Bulow boat landing in Rantowles and drove his car into the water, Antonio said.

The man then got out of the car and swam into the marsh to hide while his female passenger struggled to get out. Deputies jumped into the water to try and save the woman, but she eventually got out of the sinking car on her own, Antonio said. She was later released.

A helicopter, marine patrol and an underwater recovery team searched the water but couldn't find the suspect, Antonio said. The car was then taken out of the water and while it wasn't stolen, deputies did find a gun inside.

This is an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at 843-743-7200 or Crimestoppers at 843-554-1111
