BCSD providing free breakfast, lunch to select schools

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Beginning in the 2018-2019 school year, the Berkeley County School District will be providing students with free breakfast and lunch at select schools.

The Community Eligibility Program helps feed students for no charge in high-poverty areas across each state.

The program was put in place to help reduce hunger and to make school meal programs more efficient.

If more than 40 percent of students in each school qualify as "Identified Students" - that is, those certified for free meals without household applications - the school is deemed eligible.

This program was authorized by Congress in accordance to the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, and became available nationwide in the Fall of 2014.

Meals provided by BCSD schools under this program will follow the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines for healthy meals.
