Dave Mustaine Is Recovering After Completing Cancer Treatment

59th GRAMMY Awards - Press Room

A little over a month after Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine delivered some good news about his fight against cancer, his longest-serving band mate issued another encouraging update.

Co-founding Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson confirmed in a recent interview that Mustaine has indeed gone through the last of his cancer treatments.

"He's just going through the recovery now," Ellefson explained. "We're hopeful and optimistic about a full recovery for him with that. Once he's through that process, we're gonna just let that take as much time as it needs, and then we'll resume with the album."

In his last public statement regarding his health in September, Mustaine explained that his body was responding well to the treatments and he was nearing the home stretch.

The guitarist and singer announced his cancer diagnosis in June, saying he was beginning treatment right away. Megadeth subsequently canceled all of its upcoming tour dates, though the band continued work on the follow-up to its Grammy-winning Dystopia album at a studio on Mustaine's property in Tennessee.

Mustaine continued working on music for the album in spite of his treatment. It's unclear how far along the recording is, but Ellefson says the band's hope is to deliver the album in 2020.

The bassist added that he's hopeful Mustaine will be back to his old self again by January in time for the band's European tour with Five Finger Death Punch.
