NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - A man died after the car he was in caught on fire after the driver drove into the fence leading onto AMERICAST. The driver was later pronounced dead at MUSC, according to the Charleston County Sheriff's Department.
They say the South Carolina Highway Patrol was conducting a drivers' license checkpoint at the offramp of Cosgrove Avenue near I-26 West when a Dodge Stratus approached around 11:30 Monday night. When officers asked for the driver's license, he took off at a high speed down Cosgrove Avenue towards the King Street Extension.
The driver lost control and crashed into the fence. The car was engulfed in flames.
Cosgrove Avenue near the King Street Extension will be closed for several hours.
