South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently investigating a fatal accident involving an SUV and a pedestrian at the Dorchester/Berkeley County line.

The accident happened at 11:47 am Sunday.

According to Sgt. Bob Beres with the SC Highway Patrol, a worker employed by a contractor to remove storm debris from Interstate 26 was cutting tress in the median.  When the tree started falling, the worker, later identified as 34 year-old Heath Sutherland, ran into the roadway, crossed the left lane and into the right lane where he was struck by a 2006 Honda SUV.

The driver was taken to Trident Medical Center in Summerville where he later died

Both lanes were closed for about an hour.  All lanes of Interstate 26 was reopened around 2:00 pm.

The driver and passenger in the SUV didn’t sustain any injuries.
