College of Charleston going tobacco-free

But the rules against tobacco use will not apply to public streets and sidewalks within the downtown campus.

The ban applies to all forms of tobacco, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes and chewing tobacco. It also applies to electronic cigarettes. It applies to all college-owned or leased buildings and on all college-owned or leased land.

Smoking will be permitted in personal vehicles parked or being driven on college-owned or leased property, if the windows and doors are closed.

The city of Charleston last year outlawed smoking on public sidewalks, streets and inside parked cars around the Medical University of South Carolina. The College of Charleston is considering a similar ban at its campus.
