Authorities are releasing new information about the shooting death of 19-year-old Denzell Curnell at the Bridgeview Apartments on North Romney Street Friday night.
During a news conference Monday, Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said Curnell was armed at the time of the incident and that the weapon was recovered at the scene.
Mullen would not provide specific details regarding SLED'S ongoing investigation of the shooting; however, he says he is confident that the investigation will reveal the officer involved did not discharge his weapon.
"After the Senior Commander arrived on scene, and learned of the circumstances surrounding the death, she recognized immediately the potential for community concern surrounding this incident. Therefore, she made a wise and prudent decision to contact SLED and request that they assume a lead role in the investigation," said Mullen.
Coroner Rae H. Wooten also released a statement, addressing the concerns surrounding the shooting. "Denzell Curnell did not sustain a gunshot wound to the back but, died as a result of a single gunshot wound to the head. The investigation by SLED and the Coroner's Office is ongoing and until such time as it is complete, I will not make a ruling as to the "Manner" of death," said Wooten.
Consolidated dispatch said police responded to shots fired about 10:30 Friday night to the 100 block of North Romney Street.
News 2 on the scene witnessed police at the Bridgeview Village Apartment Complex block off parts of North Romney Street, not allowing people to drive in or out until early morning hours.
Once News 2 was allowed to access the scene Saturday morning, residents of the complex told us there was just one gunshot. Police nor SLED have confirmed that.
There are surveillance cameras at the complex but SLED refuses to release that during the investigation and the apartment complex said they could not confirm or deny if the cameras work.
This is the 24th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina this year.
